UPDATE: Photo was returned to the family
This lovely photo shows an almost 6-year-old Maxine Wyatt, a little darling with a happy face, shiny shoes and a bracelet a size too big for her. Perhaps it was mama’s and she was allowed to wear it for this photo which was taken on October 17th, 1916.
Maxine Isadelle Wyatt was born on New Year’s Eve in 1910 in State Center in Marshall, Iowa, USA. Her father Charles Augustus Wyatt was 35 year old at the time, her mother Emma May née Jontz was 24. Maxine’s parents had got married in January 1903 when Maxine’s mother Emma had been just 17 years old. In 1918, father Charles was drafted for WWI. I don’t know if the 43-year-old was shipped out to battle as WWI was slowly coming to an end in less than two months. His draft card describes him to have been of medium height and stout, with blue eyes and grey hair and his profession was merchant in St. Anthony, Marshall, Iowa. Maxine seems to have been an only child of the couple. When Maxine was 27 years old, her mother Emma passed away from Banti’s disease which is a disorder of the spleen that gets abnoramlly large and rapidly but prematurely destroys blood cells. Maxine’s father remarried in 1949.
Just like her mama, Maxine got married at the age of 17. Maxine married Charles Russell Abney, a 20-year-old meat cutter from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in January 1928. In July the same year, their son Russell Donnell Abney was born in Marshalltown, Iowa. In October, 1929, their daughter Dona Mae Abney was born.
Maxine passed away on March 3rd, 1993, just 2 weeks after her husband Charles had passed. They were both buried at Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown.
Unfortunately both of Maxine’s children have passed as well. Russel died in 1999. And Donna Mae Wills in November 2019 at the proud age of 90. Her obituary lists her loved ones: Left to cherish Dona’s memory is her husband of 67 years Don Wills; her sons Dane (Brenda) Wills of Marshalltown, David Wills of White Lake Michigan; grandchildren Ashley (Eric) Brown of State Center, Allie (John) Koshak of State Center, Nick (Kayleen) Wills of Le Grand; great-grandchildren Emrey and Easton Brown of State Center; sisters in law Virginia Abney of Cedar Rapids, Muriel Wills of Marshalltown; nieces Joan (Jon) Lawrence, Sheri Butler and nephew Brian (Laura) Abney.
Perhaps one of them might love this photo of little Maxine in 1916.
